Scaffolding is a key part of many construction projects, and is essential for getting up high to complete a project. But, your scaffolding needs to be in tip top condition to be able to support you and your equipment. Our blog dives into scaffold boards, and how you can stay on top of them safely. To find out more, keep on reading.
Scaffold Boards: An Overview
Scaffold boards are a key part of many construction projects that are carried out at a height. For projects that are being carried out up high, reliable and sturdy scaffold boards are required to support workers and equipment. Alongside scaffolding tubes, these planks provide a safe working platform for employees.
The Lifespan Of Scaffold Boards
Scaffold boards can either be treated, or untreated, which impacts their lifespan. Treated scaffold boards can last up to 5 years outside without needing a replacement. Treated scaffold boards however, can last up to 15 years outside without needing to be replaced.
One of the main threats to scaffolding planks is rot. Being outside in wet conditions makes these boards susceptible to weather damage and water damage. Using unsafe boards can be risky, and rotten boards will not be able to support the weight of people or equipment.
Rot can cause cracks, discolouration and you may notice a softness in the planks. If it feels lighter in weight, or smells musty, these may be key signs that you board it at the end of its lifespan.
How To Know When Scaffold Boards Need Replacing
If you notice any damage when it comes to your scaffold planks, you should avoid using them and replace them as soon as possible. Read our checklist to see if your scaffold boards are in need of a replacement:
- Visible cracks are a tell tale sign of damage. Look out for wide cracks, and damage around the edges of the boards.
- Warping is another key sign that your wood is suffering with water damage.
- Visible signs of rot or decay like discolouration or crumbling wood is also something to look out for.
- Weakness in the boards is also a key sign that your boards are damaged. If they feel lighter, and are flexible in any way, they are not safe to use.
- Any loose bits of wood, fraying and detaching are also signs of wear and damage.
